A Monroe-Woodbury sophomore and ice skater, Emily Schacher, is hosting a skating event at the Ice House skating rink in Hackensack, New Jersey on Sunday, May 21 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation’s “Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer” is for everyone to join for fun at local ice rinks, roller rinks, other skating facilities. This fundraising event hopes to raise awareness and support for cancer research, education, and survivorship.

“It was related to skating and two years ago, it got personal,” said Emily Schacher,  whose father was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago. “So I thought it’s time to do something.”

Emily, as a participant of this event, is looking forward to raising $10,000 by the end. 80 percent of total proceeds will go to Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation for cancer education and research, and 20 percent to Tomorrows Children’s Pediatric Oncology Center in Hackensack Medical Center.

Students can help fundraise by skating a 5 km at the Ice House.

“5K is 82 laps, but you don’t have to skate the whole thing. It’s like a party to celebrate that we’ve raised money for education and research–anything under the sun for cancer,” said Schacher.

Donations can also be done online by visiting Emily Schacher’s Fundraising Page

She invites everyone on May 21 to join this event.

“It’s going to be fun,” said Schacher. “It’s going to be a giant party, raising money–or you can donate. Either way, we will still raise money for a great cause.”
