An exciting addition to Monroe-Woodbury High School this year is a new black box theater for acting classes.

The black box theater in room 326 is painted entirely black, including black walls, black tile floors, and lights covered with black paint. According to Wikipedia, a black box theater is a simple, low-cost, flexible performance space that allows for a wide range of performances. The high school black box theater is a classroom and a half with two doorways and one wall of windows. The atmosphere is very relaxing and helps students calm their nerves. This gave the acting teacher, Ms. Hintze, new ideas for her classes.

“It is exciting for me and exciting for the students,” said Ms. Hintze. “My favorite thing is that it is an opportunity for the students, and they can really connect with the environment around them.”

Acting students agree with Ms. Hintze and also find the change exciting.

“The room is very comforting and [it] is fun to be apart of such an amazing elective,” said Anthony Tomasi.

The use of the black box theater meant leaving the auditorium. According to Mrs. Hintze, this was not an easy choice.

“The stage was like a home, I was there since the opening of the building. Also, there was a huge variety of props and if some were needed, then they were already there,” said Ms. Hintze

This new addition to the school gives students a new way to approach acting and may help students to relax and become more confident.
